DonateMate FAQ

Based on research and conversations with many parents, this page has been set-up to answer common questions quickly and easily.

This is not to be taken as financial advice, please discuss any specific circumstances you might have with your usual advisor.

How much money can you get back?

You get back as cash 33% of your school donation amount. For my school that’s 33% of $1,500, or $500 per student.

How many years can I go back?

As a general rule, you can go back four years. Which really adds up!

How do I Register for Donation Tax Credits?

If you have never claimed a donation tax credit before, you will need to log in to the MyIR site and follow three easy steps to register before using the main PDF guide. The three easy to follow steps are listed here including screen shot images!

Is this “tax credit” cash deposited in bank?

There are options available, but yes you can have the cash transferred directly into your bank account!

How long will it take me to enter the donations online?

This will vary person to person, but it important to do this at your own pace. My guide makes it easier to follow the basic steps. After your first claim, each one should take only 10 minutes to complete.

Can I do this, even if I haven’t paid any tax?

No, you need to have paid tax in the year in the year the donation statement relates to. It could be that your spouse/partner has paid tax in that year and can make the claim on their account if both of your names are on the donation statement/receipt.

Can I split the tax credit with my spouse/partner?

Yes you can, however there are some important conditions including having both names on the donation receipt, and ensuring you have both paid tax that year and you don’t claim more than the total donations. Refer to the IRD website for details if this applies to you.

What if I have a business/accountant?

If you have an accountant already doing your tax return, you should check in with them to ensure you are doing the right thing, at the right time. Most accountants will claim the tax credits for you, as long as you provide the donation receipt. However, you may be paying an hourly rate for this service.

What if I don’t have myIR? Can I still claim?

The DonateMate guide is designed to support the myIR online process, but if do not have myIR, you can submit your receipts using the Tax credit claim form – IR526.
